As a response to Europe’s “Seven Wonders of the World” list, which didn’t include any Russian sights, Russia organized a national contest to select the seven most beautiful destinations the country has to offer. Almost 26 million people went online and voted for their favorites since the contest started in autumn 2007 and the final results were revealed on June 12 of this year.

The “Seven Wonders of Russia” contest had several stages, after the first one 49 national locations were chosen and after the second one only 14 remained. Finally the people chose the places they thought best represented their country’s beauty. There was nothing better than swinging high during childhood. Oribi Gorge is the place in South Africa where you can find this favourite childhood pastime but with a rush of adrenaline added to it. Located along the ravine of the Mzimkulwana River, Oribi George has the base formed out of rocks over 1000 million years old, while the cliffs are a result of sandstone deposited about 365 million years ago. The Mzimkulwana River flowed over the surface and gradually eroded the rocks away, cutting into the earth’s crust.

The Swedish Ice Hotel

posted in: Destinations  |  posted by: Matt on July 27, 2008  |  2 Comments

The Swedish Ice Hotel is located in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. It has over 80 rooms and is built using ice from the nearby Torne River. Construction began in October using 10,000 tones of ice and 30,000 tons of snow. The 30,000 square foot hotel is located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle and features an Absolute Vodka ice bar, an ice cinema, an ice chapel, ice family rooms, and ice suites. The whole structure uses 4,000 tons of ice.

The hotel began in 1990, when French artist Jannot Derid held an exhibition in a cylinder-shaped igloo in the area. One night there were no rooms available in the town so some of the visitors slept in sleeping bags on top of reindeer skin.
