We’re moving more and more from rural areas, grasping the sustainable urban development. By 2015, there will be 23 “mega cities”, and 19 of them will be located in developing countries. And the United Arab Emirates is perhaps one of the country with the most famous and anticipated urban projects. To see why any major city in the UAE is a major attraction, here are just 3 of the most astonishing urban developments we’re about to see.
UAE Towers

The Burj al Alam in Dubai
Another one’s of Dubai’s endeavors, The Burj Al Alam is planned to be the world’s largest commercial skyscraper. The skyskraper will include retail stores, offices, hotels and apartments. The hotel rooms will be the world’s highest set of hotel rooms, at over 400m, while the top of the building will have a Turkish bath, sky garden, and other club facilities. The behemoth will be unleashed in 2009, being set to reach an astounding 484 m above ground.

The Landmark in Abu Dhabi
Belonging to the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Landmark will be a 80+ storey building and, once finished, the tallest building in the world spanning over 1,100 feet (335.28m). The concept of architectural design was developed by Cesar Pelli Associates. The building is said to be finished in 2009, bringing the title of “tallest building in the world” to the Arab Emirates. The ever expanding skyline of Abu Dhabi will be soon including the Tameer Towers. This project, designed by U.S architect Hilson Moran of Gensler and Structural Engineers, will consist of 6 buildings spanning over a land space of 465,000 square metres. Set between the Arabian Sea and a 1million square feet Central Park, the Tameer Towers include 4 residential towers, a commercial tower, a 7-star-luxury-business hotel. The architect has also included in the plans for the majestic project stepped villas and townhouses, a private marina and a canal promenade. The project is estimated to cost $3.5 billion and should be finished by 2011.

If the crude prices keep on going the way they are – all the other countries will be broke and the residents of middle east will be building buildings better than this – isnt there a way I could shift all the crude under their lands to beneath the Indian peninsula ?

Dubai is hosting the world’s tallest building now. Since the fuel prices are sky rocketing and Gulf countries have their surpluses of oil reserves, these are the cities to look forward in the future. Unless and until there is no major fight in the area like the one happened few years between USA and Iraq.

I’m surprised Burj Khalifa (until recently known as Burj Dubai) isn’t on the list.

It was resently opened, at a whopping 828m in height. The base also has Dubai’s current largest mall, housing a three storey aquarium with tunnel.
