Public Christmas lights and decorations are a must in all the European cities, when the holidays are coming. Every city is going out of its way to get the most impressive light shows. Be that as it may, there are some places in Europe, where prior to Christmas they become very festive and a series of events create the magical spirit on the streets and in the city squares. Christmas markets are the most expected events of December and here are five of the most beautiful examples in Europe.
Prague, Czech Republic
In Prague, there are two major Christmas Markets, in Old Town Square and in Wenceslas Square, starting on December 5th and ending one day before Christmas Eve. It’s a tradition to sip mulled wine (svaree vino) while visiting the huts with handicrafts and hot food.
Dublin, Ireland
The capital of Ireland holds the fourth Christmas Market this year, from December 12 to December 23. The visitors are expected here by more than 100 market traders, seasonal food, stocking fillers, carol singers and bands so that the festive atmosphere is guaranteed.
Stockholm, Sweden
Skansen Christmas Market (December 5-6, 12-13, 19-20) is one of the richest and oldest in all of Europe. You can find everything here from sausages to linen, gingerbread and children’s toys. Old carols can be heard all over this wonderful open-air museum and you experience first-hand the beauty of a Christmas up North.
Copenhagen, Denmark
From November 20 to December 30, the Tivoli Gardens becomes the center of attraction in all of Copenhagen. Besides the sweetmeats the Danish are famous for, handicrafts and seasonal gifts can also be found. One can also take a ride in the oldest merry-go-round in the world (150 years old) and, for a few times every day, during the season this year, the visitors can enjoy an artistic light show on the lake.
Berlin, Germany
In Germany’s capital city, there are no less than 60 Christmas Markets to satisfy avid shoppers. The ones at Charlottenburg Castle, in Gendarmenmarkt and on the Alte Postdamer Strasse are some of the most popular. Mulled wine and the cinnamon stars are just a few of the delicacies one can find; hand-made presents are also very sought after. All these treats and more are available each year from the 23rd of November to the 31st of December.
