We all know why Amsterdam is famous: the coffee shops, the Red District, the canals, the museums and many other things. You’ll find hundreds of tourists on the main attraction spots. But if you really want to discover Amsterdam as it really was meant to be – peaceful and charming, here are some tips of what and when to visit.

1. Enjoy a sunny day on the Museumplein. It was a big street in Amsterdam, but several years ago the municipality decided to demolish the street and to make a grass lawn. It is nowadays surrounded by the Concert Hall, Rijksmuseum and Vincent van Gogh museum.

2.Visit and buy from the floating Flower Market. Enjoy some natural odors from the tons of flowers, bulbs and crafts at the floating Flower Market on Singel, between Koningsplein and the Muntplein.

3. Relax on The Skinny Bridge. The Skinny Bridge (The Magere Brug) on the Amstel river is the perfect place to chill after walking on the streets in the city’s center. With the Carre Theater on one side and the Stopera on the other side, it is one of the most picturesque bridges of Amsterdam.

4. Take a multicultural tour in Pijp. If there is a place where you can find all the subcultures of Amsterdam, Pijp is the one. Turkish, Spanish, Chinese, Thai, Indian and Moroccan restaurants, bars, clubs and shops can be found here.

5. Visit a secret catholic chapel. During the Dutch Reformations in the 14th-17th centuries, the catholic churches were prohibited in Netherlands. There is one building, though, where you can find a secret marble chapel, a meeting place for all the Catholics for more than 200 years.

6. Eat a herring. As common as the fast-foods in other countries, the stands selling herrings are very common on Amsterdam’s streets. After hours of walking, try a herring, just like the locals like to eat it.

7. Visit Amsterdam on Queen’s Day, April 30. Queen’s Day or Koninginnedag attracts 700,000 visitors each year  from all over the world. Meet the happy crowds of orange Dutch people and enjoy the traditional parties in the quarter of Jordan.
