A favorite holiday destination for celebrities like Collin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins, the Amalfi Coast is known as one of the most spectacular shorelines in the world. Over time, it has become synonymous with luxury, natural beauty and eccentricity.
The Amalfi Coast winds along the southern part of the Sorrentine Peninsula, in the Italian province of Salerno. It has been an important mark on the international travel map, ever since the 18th century, but its popularity peaked during the late 1900s, as a result of major investments in luxury travel.
Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Minori and Sorento are the five major resorts spread across the Costiera Amalfitana (that is how the Italians refer to the Amalfi Coast). All of them used to be small fishing villages, but have now been converted into some of the most beautiful and luxurious holiday destinations on the Italian Riviera. These smallish towns, each numbering only around 5,000 inhabitants, are viewed as national treasures because of their unique Mediterranean architecture and breathtaking natural sights.
Positano and Amalfi are the jewels of the Amalfi Coast, attracting tourists with beautiful ports, filled with wooden boats and luxury yachts alike, dozens of 4 and 5 star-hotels and lavish green gardens. Ravello is regarded as one of the most romantic resorts on Earth, while Minori makes a perfect destination for culture and history enthusiasts, featuring Roman ruins, over 2,000 years old. It turns out the Amalfi Coast was one of the favorite retreats of Roman high class, as the entire shoreline is filled with ruins of Roman villas.
The road traversing the Amalfi Coast, from the western town of Positano to Vietri sul Mare, in the east, offers travelers some of the most amazing vistas in the world. It winds around every rugged cliff, sometimes cutting through the mountain, but remains close to the steep shoreline, offering glorious views of the ever clear Tyrrhenian Sea. The Lattari Mountains plunge abruptly into the waters, and, looking from the sea, you understand why all the settlements in the area have become virtual tourist magnets. Their unique architecture, with houses, hotels, churches and even gardens dug directly into rock, is what makes the Amalfi Coast resorts so unique.
As you can imagine, a vacation in such a fairytale setting isn’t cheap and the Amalfi Coast is known as one of Europe’s most exclusive destinations. The top class hotels of Amalfi treat their guests like royalty, but they are quite pricey for the average person. Fortunately, there are also plenty of considerably cheaper private villas that are more than welcome to accommodate you.
If you’re looking for a special place to spend your vacation, where Nature’s beauties blend perfectly with modern and luxurious facilities, the Amalfi Coast is a perfect destination.
