It’s no secret that Americans have a serious obesity problem and that’s no surprise if we take a look at the kind of foods they’ve managed to come up with over the years. Here’s a look at some delicious-looking foods you can only enjoy on American soil:
Buffalo wings
One of America’s most famous foods, Buffalo wings originated from, you guessed it, the city of Buffalo, New York. There are many legends of where the wings were first prepared but no one knows exactly who cooked them first and where.
Buffalo wings are chicken wings that are deep-fried and then coated with a special sauce made out of vinegar, butter and pepper hot sauce. Contrary to what most people think, if prepared following the original recipe, the wings are very low in carbohydrates.
Corn dogs
Another trademark of American cuisine, the famous corn dogs made their first appearance somewhere around 1930 and since then their popularity kept growing. They are practically hot dogs coated in corn batter, deep-fried and served on a stick.
You can probably find corn dogs at every fast-food stand in America and also as frozen food in every major supermarket. We recommend them fresh, served with mustard.
Cobb salad
This American delicacy was born on a late night in 1937 when Robert H. Cobb, the owner of Brown Derby Restaurant, chopped up whatever ingredients he had in his refrigerator, mixed them up and served them to Sid Grauman, a Hollywood operator. From then on Grauman kept asking for the Cobb salad and the news of this new, delicious dish spred to Hollywood like wildfire, until it was finally added on the menu. Now it is famous all over the world.
The salad in the photo is a small Cobb salad, so you can imagine what a large one looks like. It has often been criticized by physicians who say it is very unhealthy.
S’mores
This traditional Yankee food may not be “haute cuisine” but it’s definitely one of the tastiest, most original snacks in the world. It got its unusual name from people who loved it so much they asked for more with their mouths full, so instead of “some more” they said “s’more”.
S’mores are usually associated with picnics in America and they consist of a marshmallow and a piece of chocolate stuck between two graham crackers. The marshmallow is heated above the campfire so it can melt the chocolate and make the S’more creamier.
Reuben sandwich
One of the greasiest sandwiches available, the Reuben was first prepared by one Reuben Kulakofsky from Omaha, Nebraska, sometime between 1920 and 1935. It’s quite a big sandwich made with rye bread, pastrami, Swiss Cheese, sauerkraut and Russian or Thousand Island dressing.
The Reuben sandwich may look delicious but it’s sure to make your cholesterol skyrocket.
Philadelphia Cheesesteak
The pride and joy of Philadelphia cuisine, the cheesesteak is a delicious heart-stopper. To make a proper Philly cheeesteak the cook must use the greasiest steak he can get his hands on, use Cheez Whiz (a processed cheese sauce) instead of real cheese, and add all the grease he fried the onions in to the sandwich. Because outside Philadelphia people like to have their hearts beat as long as possible, locals say their city is the only place to get an original cheesesteak.
Cookie-dough Ice-cream
Ask any American and they’ll tell you they love cookie-dough ice-cream. And for good reason, this desert is simply incredibly delicious. Though unsafe because of the raw egg present in the cookie dough, this genuine American treat is worth all the risks, even if it was deadly, at least you’d die happy and satisfied.
Some people love to just eat the cookie-dough. The most appreciated cookie-dough ice-creams are the ones that have 80-90 percent cookie base.
