Angel Falls – the Greatest Waterfall in the World

One of the best ways of living the greatness is finding it when you’re actually looking for something else. The same thing happened to Angel, an ex-american First World War pilot, in 1935. Angel was exploring the Auyan Tepui – The Devil’s Mountain, searching for a river with gold deposits. Looking down from his plane he first saw the water going down over the edge of a highland, into the tropical forests. After avoiding a huge cliff, he saw the wonder: somewhere between the clouds, a whole river was falling into the lower valley, with the sound of a thunder.
Located in Venezuela, in the Canaima National Park of Gran Sabana Region of the Bolivar State, Angel Falls is the world’s highest waterfall. It measures 979 meters, of which 807 meters represent the clear drop. The height of the cascade is so colossal that before getting to the ground, the water is turned into mist by the winds. The mist can be felt more than 3 kilometers away.
Angel Falls has a rate of flow 18 times bigger than the Niagara Falls. During the raining season, the clouds of water drops on the base of the cascade irrigating a large part of the forest. In the dry season though, the “clouds” transform themselves into fog before getting in the river.
The falls are located into an isolated place in the tropical jungle, therefore getting there is not the easiest thing in the world. A flight from Caracas to Ciudad Bolivar is required to get to the Canaima Camp. From here, you can board any of the river trips to the base of the cascade.
For about US$ 300 you can get two nights packages – including the flight fares to and from the park, accommodation, meals and excursions in the Canaima National Park. It’s really a cheap price you have to pay if you want to see one of the most impressive places on earth.
