Auroville – Laboratory of Human Evolution

Most people talk about wanting to live in a place where racial, religious or social differences have no importance, where their kids could be sheltered from vices and violence, but few know such a place exists not only in their dreams, but in real life.

Auroville is where humanity will begin its regeneration. A New-age philosopher once said that this process will start in a small place where people are able to coexist on a level where they can trust each other. This unique city was established by The Mother, the disciple and successor of Sri Aurobindo, a famous Indian philosopher, Yogi and spiritual Guru.

During a revelation, The Mother understood the world needed a place where people could get away from national rivalries, social differences, perverted morals and religious conflicts. Sponsored by UNESCO she built Auroville, near the town of Pondicherry, India. Representatives from 121 countries and from all the states of India attended the ceremony, all placing a handful of dirt from their homelands in a giant urn, that now stands in the middle of the city, as a symbol of unity.

There are about 1,700 people from 35 countries living in Auroville, most from India and France. They live in total harmony, without a system of laws or police. They all try to channel their aggressive instincts towards eliminating the causes of unhappiness and ignorance. The inhabitants of Auroville regard their city as a laboratory and themselves as the pioneers of human evolution.

There is an aura of dignity and purity surrounding Auroville. It is the only place in India where you won’t find a single beggar. Things like smoking, drinking, sex or politics are strictly forbidden and if you’re looking for a nightclub to party until dawn, you’re not going to find it here.

“Aurovillians” build their own homes. Some are simple huts built with bamboo and palm-tree leaves, while others have futuristic designs and built entirely out of concrete. The people here worked together to transform wild fields into the largest farm in the area, Aurogreen. They built dams, water reservoirs and irrigation systems to sustain their ecological food source.

Out of the roughly 250 houses in Auroville, 80 of them have photovoltaic panels and everybody tries to consume as little resources as they can. All the city’s inhabitants donate their income surplus to a community help fund.

Most tourists are disappointed when they arrive in this surreal place. They expect to be greeted like they would be at a 5-star hotel, but the truth is “Aurovillians” believe they should devote their energy to things more important than welcoming tourists. It’s an interesting place to experience but it shouldn’t be regarded as an average travel destination.

Auroville is a place where people try to correct, transform and perfect themselves in order to lead humanity into the next step of evolution. It may be hard to believe such a place exists in real life, but Auroville has been around for 41 years.

This post was very interesting. I was just thinking about some of these things last week so it’s great to see other people thinking along the same lines.
