Winter Holidays are just around the corner and if you plan on spending them flying down the slopes, in a traditional winter setting, there’s no better place than charming little Bad Kleinkirchheim. Sporting 185 km of impeccable slopes, it’s one of the most popular ski resorts in Austria.

Set in a fairytale location surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Austrian Alps and dotted with small farms and windmills, Bad Kleinkirchheim seems totally isolated from the daily turmoil of the modern world. Its fascinating history can be traced back to 1166 when archbishop Konrad II of Salzburg confirms a donation for the building of a chapel. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1473 and by the French, during the Napoleonic Wars, but despite its troubled past Bad Kleinkirchheim is one of the most peaceful places you can visit.

One of the main attractions of this Austrian mountain haven is the village church, built in 1492 and preserved in impeccable state, by local authorities. But most tourists come to Bad Kleinkirchheim for an incredible skiing experience on its flawless slopes. The Kleinkirchheim Ski Club numbers over 2,000 members, more than the entire population of the resort, and the Alpine Skiing World Cup took place here on several occasions. You have to agree that says a lot about the skiing conditions. If you can’t ski, then this is the perfect place to learn, under close guidance of some of the most gifted and patient instructors in the world.

But skiing is not the only sport you can enjoy in Bad Kleinkirchheim. Located at an altitude of 1085 meters above see level, this Austrian holiday spot makes it possible for tourists to indulge in other fun activities like golf, tennis, soccer and even chess, at one of the most charming chess clubs in Europe.

Bad Kleinkirchheim features a wide range of cabins and hotels, both in the heart of the resort or isolated on mountain tops. Whichever you opt for, a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve is all but guaranteed.

As far as culinary delights are concerned, Bad Kleinkirchheim offers its visitors the chance to experience famous cuisines like German, Serbian or Polish, in a traditional ambiance. Nothing comes close to relaxing after an energy-draining day of skiing, by sitting in front of the fireplace and enjoying a tasty gujvanita (cheese and yogurt cake), or a gingerbread cookie and a cup of hot black tea, complemented with milk or honey. Other pleasurable ways of spending the evenings include having a drink in one of the friendly pubs or enjoying a nice massage. The choice is yours.
