Bloody Bay Wall – The Ultimate Diving Experience

If the Cayman Islands are often called the “Mecca of diving”, then Bloody Bay Wall must be its Holy Mosque. A 6,000 feet drop along an almost completely vertical wall, the diverse marine life and incredible visibility makes this place the ultimate diving destination on Earth.

The Cayman Islands are known mostly as a tax-free heaven where the uber-rich keep their treasures, but experienced divers will tell you of another paradise located underwater, close to Little Cayman, the smallest island in this Caribbean archipelago. Named after a pirate battle that took place in the area centuries ago, Blood Bay Wall is now a pristine scuba-diving spot that attracts divers from all round the world.
Divers on the wall
Although the marine life and the island’s exotic beauty are nothing short of impressive, Little Cayman’s unique natural architecture is what makes Bloody Bay Wall so special. Just where the beach ends, the seafloor starts to descend gradually up to 18-25 feet, where it turns into an abrupt vertical cliff that goes down 6,000 feet. The incredible underwater visibility allows you to explore the wall at depths you’d elsewhere find yourself in total darkness.

Jumping off the boat into the clear blue waters above Bloody Bay Wall, many are somewhat spooked by the endless darkness beneath them. But as soon as they discover it’s actually a lively world, populated by the most colorful and playful inhabitants, the uneasiness disappears instantly. Hard and soft coral completely cover up the wall, together with giant sponges and sea fans. Small, vividly colored fish make their home here and won’t hesitate to dart into you for invading their territory. Others will just nibble away at your fingernails, in search of delicious dead skin.

In the thousand of caverns and crevices of Bloody Bay Wall shrimps, crabs, brittle stars and many other crustaceans take shelter from predators who often venture in this place. Barracudas, eagle rays and sharks are often spotted in the area, enjoying the colorful scenery and searching for prey.

Bloody Bay Wall might seem like a place only seasoned divers should try, but beginners can also witness the beauty of corals and their colorful inhabitants, in total safety. As long as you follow the rules and don’t go too far down into the abyss, exploring the wondrous marine life will be a delightful experience.

Located near an island just 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, with only 150 inhabitants per square mile and no island wide electricity, Bloody Bay Wall can truly be referred to as a natural paradise, yet untouched by Man’s destructive ignorance.
