Capri – Escape in the Mediterranean Paradise

Several miles away off the Sorrentine Peninsula, you can find one of the oldest Italian resorts and a breathtaking Mediterranean island – Capri. Known in the Greek mythology as the island of sirens, Capri gets very crowded during July & August, but it’s a heaven in the other months of the year, for all of those who love calm and relaxing islands.
Capri is not just about beaches and tanning, eating amazing Italian food and luxury restaurants or sailing and enjoying the crystal clear water. Capri is an ancient town, inhabited by Greeks and Romans, with hundreds of traditions and so many cultural sights. Meeting the warm and proud people of Capri during the public events often organized here can give you a clue about the meaningful history and civilization of the island. The historic center of the city is unique by its composition: small houses with closed courtyards, as well as narrow and vaulted streets.
Other famous places you can see in Capri: Marina Grande – the oldest and most famous dock of the island, Villa Jobis – the residence of the Emperor Tiberius, the Belvedere of Tragara – a plateau with an amazing panoramic view, the numerous churches – the civil and religious events on the island vary, so as the churches; the Blue Grotto or Grotta Azzura is a wonderful cave over the turquoise water, inaccessible sometimes due to its tiny entrance and large waves.
Capri is also the island of festivals: Festival of San Constanzo and Festival of Sant’Antonio (the patron saint of the main cities) are celebrated in May and June, the International Folklore Festival (in the first week of August), Settembrata Anacaprese – a large rustic festival for celebrating the grape harvest, in September and Capri Film Festival – a famous film festival dedicated to both European and American cinema.

I only spent a day at Capri on a day trip from Positano. I had a great day and can remember having a really nice lunch (food is expensive) and a very memorable ice cream. I was unable to visit the Blue Grotto due to the bad weather conditions. Capri is an Italian island worth visiting!
