Desert Rhino Camp of Namibia: A walk into the uncharted soul of Africa!

A million acres of privacy in the heart of Africa, a trip into Mother Nature’s most beloved land and a close look at some of the rarest wild species on the planet – an expedition to the Desert Rhino Camp of Namibia is unlike anything else that the African continent has on offer.

The Dark Continent has faced many a strife and the wealth of natural reserve hidden in its thick jungles, vast desert expanse and great tropical rain forests has been lost to human greed. But thanks to the special efforts of conservation organizations, more than a million acres of wild desert land in the Palmwag Reserve, still stands intact till this day. And it is here that we get a rare sneak peak into the life of the Black Rhino.

It was in the 1980’s and 90’s when much of Africa’s natural wealth was being plundered ruthlessly and its rare and unique wildlife treasure slaughtered mindlessly for economic gains. But thankfully, a voluntary organization – Save the Rhino Trust, along with Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) embarked on a vision that aimed at saving the Black Rhino.

Today the region is brimming with wildlife and is home to one of the most private, calm, tranquil and magical holidays that you will find on the planet.

Located between Etosha and the Skeleton Coast, the 400,000 hectare Palmwag Conservancy supports the largest free-roaming population of desert-adapted black rhinos in Africa, desert-adapted elephants, Hartman’s mountain zebra, southern giraffe, gemsbok (oryx), springbok, greater kudu, dwarf antelope like steenbok and klipspringer, scrub hare, meerkats, black-backed jackal and small spotted genet.

The journey is capped with a luxurious stay at its camp that offers you an African-styled tent, delicious food, clean water and of course plenty of adventure. The most exciting part of the voyage to the Rhino Camp is Rhino tracking on foot.

The day long activity is supervised by an expert guide who will make sure that you are safe and yet get the best view of all that is on offer in this wild and untamed land. You will experience the great thrill of walking up and watching the large animal at close proximity (just don’t get too eager). Also keep in mind that the camp rules maintain that there is a zero disturbance policy and no point will you interact with the beast. Since your guide will not carry any weapons with him and neither will you, it is best to keep your distance.

Apart from the Black Rhino, you will obviously be treated to a fabulous array of wildlife that is on display and a great camp lunch in the middle of the tracking activity should keep you up for the exciting task. Children below 12 are not allowed on the Rhino tracking trip and those in between 12 and 16 can tag along at the discretion of the guide.

Other exciting activities include full-day outings with a picnic lunch, birding, and day and night nature that will help you understand this rare ecosystem all the better.

Whether you are a nature lover, wildlife admirer, adventure seeker or someone who fell in love with Africa (just like us), the Desert Rhino Camp of Namibia is a trip you cannot miss. If you are newlywed, then this is as romantic as anything else, as the privacy of this vast land is almost unmatchable…

Just give it a shot and you will be more than glad that you chose this corner of Africa to recharge your lost zest for life.
