Dordogne, a region of Aquitane, France, is one of the most picturesque domains in this part of Europe. The area is rich in castles, historical museums, breathtaking scenery and delicious examples of French cuisine.
The French refer to Dordogne using the term Perigord. The region is divided into four separate parts: the black Perigord, the purple Perigord, the green one and the white one. Some tend to say that due to the high number of tourists, the most beautiful part is the black Perigord, with its well conserved stone villages, wonderful chateau, the rivers and the prehistoric caves, but you can find something special in every corner of Dordogne.
The origin of the black Perigord comes from the dark color of the oak trees, but some of the villagers mention the truffle as the origin of the name. The town of Sarlat, la Rogue Gageac and the Domme are just three of the places you absolutely need to see if you get there. The area is renowned not just for the cultural sights, but for the gastronomic tradition, as well.
The purple Perigrod, named after the color of the vineyards that cover the hills around Bergerac was for a long time the reason for conflicts between the English and the French. Nowadays you can see here numerous defensive citadels and fortified market towns.
The green Perigord takes its name from the emerald forests, not very popular, therefore a perfect place for a quiet vacation. Nontron, the biggest town in the region has a Toy and Doll museum. The region is a perfect destination if you want to interact with the peaceful life of the local inhabitants.
The white Perigord takes its name from the limestone one can found around Perigueux. Although it is the most industrial region, Perigueux has various reasons why it should be the starting town for exploring this wonderful region.
