Visiting ancient cities is the best experience you can have if you are into historical things. Just visit the ruins and get to know about people who existed before us. It is a magical experience and one that makes you appreciate life more too. City of Tikal, for example was a super power of sorts in its time and when we visited it was in ruins.
It is a beautiful place with huge pyramids! And the tourist camps are in the middle of a jungle. They do not have lights there, so you have to visit the site and get back to camp before nightfall and even at the camp they turn all lights off before 11 pm so tourists don't bother the animals. Animal rights are more important there though, since you have to be a bit stubborn to sleep during the night, the monkeys all seem to party the night away, it’s a huge ruckus ;)

It does sound interesting, the question I have is that why did everyone use to build pyramids in ......well....BC times???? was it just easy to build, which going by the documentaries on Egyptian ones doesn't look that easy or was it fashion???? like sky scrapers or something
very good question!!! I tried to find you an answer but couldn't find anything other than they have some aesthetic value.....so there you go...they were probably in fashion
I don’t know about the Mayan Pyramids but the Egyptian ones were to satisfy their religious beliefs. I read somewhere that they believed in the existence of the spirit they called Ka. Most of their architecture that has survived is for their royal and religious elites and they believed that their kings would come back from the dead and when they come back the soul, or Ka will need all the luxuries. That probably is the reason they buried their kings with valuables in the pyramids with their bodies as well preserved in the shape of mummies as they could manage. I hope that helps, do correct me if I am wrong though.
From what I know of Maya pyramids, they were probably religiously motivated as well. Like in Tikal, they usually had a temple at the top of their pyramids; the obvious reason was the close proximity to the heavens. ;)
I have no background with these Mayan pyramids but that movie Apocalypto, I think that explains it all.
