It is my first Eurail trip, my friend went but had a very bad trip. Europe is beautiful but the journey for him was torture. Smoking was allowed and he got a jump seat in the aisle even after he had a full ticket. Its one of the few bad stories I've heard about Eurail, how do I make my trip better?

hehe...don't think getting a ticket ensures you get a good spot in the train too. You have to make a reservation to get yourself a good seat. Or you can get their early and get into a compartment that is not marked as reserved.

If you want seating in no smoking areas I recommend you make prior booking or get there really early. There are people who will get on and off at different stops so if there is no empty compartment that is not booked maybe you can check the reservation card to see where they get on and the station where the booking ends. That way you will have a place to sit in while those that booked aren’t on the train yet. ;)
