I've planned it before but never actually went to Rome. I want to look at the ancient architecture and LIVE some of what I've read about Rome so can I get tips on the places I should plan on visiting?
And can I find some good options for hotels in Rome? Nothing too fancy but we expect the hotel to be comfortable so we can enjoy ourselves.

If you head to the Vatican museums I would suggest you avoiding Saturdays as they are usually very busy. They are open year round but last Sundays of the month are free entry and I think they probably are closed on Catholic holidays. Not sure on that last one.
I have not actually been there but my cousin says you shouldn't buy anything that sounds outrageously priced because it is usually that. Italian shopkeepers bargain a lot and something selling as high as 80-90 Euros can get down to 10-15 Euros if you keep at the shopkeeper and walk away if he still doesn't go low. They do think tourists will pay more for a souvenir so beware; it can actually end up being fun.
