Founded by the Trojans and the birthplace of Homer, Izmir is nowadays the third largest city of Turkey and the second biggest port of the country after Istanbul. Only in Izmir can one find the perfect mixture of the modern Mediterranean Europe and the traditional Turkey.

A city of such importance managed to design some of the finest city infrastructure in Turkey: promenades bordered by palm trees, paved avenues, huge green parks and well preserved monuments. Izmir hotels are also said to be some of the best one can find at the shores of the Aegean Sea.

The city is considered to be a gateway to the lovely landscapes of the Turkish coastline. The Aegean Sea is famous worldwide for its clear blue waters and for the dramatic scenery, and the province of Izmir proves the rule. Picturesque fishing villages and small lovely harbors are spread all over the coastline, so that every sight you discover here will be different.

But not just the surroundings of the city are worth seeing. Izmir itself is quite impressive. Probably the most famous part of Izmir is Konak Square and Konak Street. This is the most crowded part of the city and this is explainable, considering the nearby points of interest. The City Hall, the Konak Mosque, Izmir’s major Bazaar, the Opera House and the Music Academy can be easily reached from here.

The Izmir Clock Tower, a landmark of the city, is also located here. Built in 1901, the tower is clearly part of the Ottoman architectural style. It is 25 meters high and it features four fountains.

The Velvet Castle is another major point of interest for tourists of Izmir. Kadifekale was built in the 4th century BC and it played a major strategical role in defending the city over time. Although the site is currently under restoration, Roman and Byzantine engravings can still be seen on the walls.
