The Jindo Moses Miracle

Jindo Island, in South Korea hosts one of the most incredible natural phenomenons in the world, known as the Moses Miracle. Think parting of the Red Sea without Moses and his blessed cane.

Twice a year, at the beginning of May and in the middle of June, the waters between Jindo and Modo islands split and create a causeway 2.8 kilometers long and 40 meters wide. The path lasts for roughly an hour and allows people from both places to meet halfway and celebrate.

This amazing event was unknown to the western world until 1975, when a French journalist traveled to Korea, witnessed the miracle first-hand and wrote about it in the paper. Since then it gained great popularity and tourists from all over the world started arriving on the island to see this phenomenon of biblical proportions. The locals organize a festival to celebrate the memorable event each time it occurs but with the number of tourists growing ever higher each year, they have decided to hold it more often. Attending the Jindo Moses Miracle Festival, one can enjoy an impressive display of fireworks, a laser beam show, traditional music and a remarkable performance by Korean Shamanists.

Legend says the Moses Miracle first took place a long time ago, when the village of Jindo was attacked by a pack of bloodthirsty tigers. Everyone managed to escape to the neighboring Modo village, except for an old woman who was left behind. Out of desperation she started praying to the Sea God to split the waves and grant her safe passage. The deity took pity on her and granted her wish, allowing her to escape the hungry beasts.

Scientists haven’t yet explained why this extremely low tide occurs and that’s probably best because then it would lose a great part of its charm. After all a miracle isn’t a miracle anymore if science can explain it completely.

The Jindo Moses Miracle is an event that must be experienced especially by those that believe in anything else than pure science and need something to keep their faith alive. Once in the middle of the sea the only thing missing will be the Egyptian chariots rushing up behind you.
