Jurassic Coast: Spectacular landscape brings the Mesozoic back to life!

Since the amazing trilogy of Spielberg, the whole world is all the more fascinated about the giants that once ruled the planet. Dinosaurs and the creatures of the Jurassic age are still largely shrouded in mystery even though modern day science has reconstructed their life to a large extent.

Apart from stunning geographical features, great history and a magnificent coastline with varied features, the Jurassic Coast on the English Channel coast of southern England, is a sneak peak into the age when the mighty Dinosaurs roamed free on the planet.
Stretching a distance of around 153 km from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, the stunning landscape is a stunning natural World Heritage Site as classified by UNESCO. The Jurassic Coast provides a vivid cross-section of the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of Earth’s history with cliffs and valleys that mirror the times.

The coast is famous both for its archaeological excavations and geographical beauty. This fabulous countryside was the place where Mary Anning studied the fossils of the coastline around Lyme Regis and discovered the first complete Ichthyosaur fossil.

The spectacular natural cliffs and the rough coastline were under the Royal Navy during the period of World War II and even until today some parts of the magnificent coastline are inaccessible to tourists as the base at Bovington is in use by the Army. But a tour of the Portland Harbor is free for visitors and it sports some breathtaking sites such as the Durdle Door, the Lulworth Cove and the Cove.

It is not just the cliffs that stun you with their unique formation, but the beaches also teach you a treacherous lesson in rough geography with places like the Chesli Beach. Much of the area around the Jurassic Coast is pretty dangerous for ships and marine transportation, and wrecks on these unforgiving shores are pretty common.

The Portland Harbor area and the places around it have seen shipwrecks for ages, and the worst of them all occurred in January 2007 when MSC Napoli crashed into these rocks and ended up causing a giant oil spill.
Apart from this geographic importance and activity, the coast is simply a paradise for tourists and an amazing visual splendor that will fill your heart with awe and long-lasting memories.
There are many places in the UK which are on top of the places-to-visit list for everyone who land in London, but few really know about these secluded wonders. The Jurassic Coast is a must visit spot if you ever happen to be in UK, where you’ll find a rare and exclusive window into the ancient past of the magnificent and vibrant planet that we all call our home.
