The Netherlands are famous for things like windmills, complex water channels, Amsterdam or flowers. Well, if there is such a thing as a flower heaven, it has to be Keukenhof, the world’s largest flower garden.
One of the most photographed gardens in the world, Keukenhof is located in the town of Lisse, near Amsterdam. The idea of opening such a wonderful place came to a major de Lisse, in 1949. He worked with several expert gardeners to create a place where flower enthusiasts could present the latest types of hybrid tulips. The Keukenhof Garden Complex now spreads over 32 ha and counts over 9,000,000 flowers.
Before you rush and book yourself a ticket to the Netherlands, you should know the garden is open to the public for just 2 months a year. It opens its gates at the end of March and closes them again at the end of May. Because of this relatively short interval, flower aficionados from all-over the world rush to Lisse, so you have to arm yourself with a lot of patience.
Even though tulips are one of Netherlands’ trademarks, they are not the only type of flowers in Keukenhof. There are also hyacinths, orchids, azaleas, narcissus and dozens of other species of flowers spread over seven theme-gardens, including Mediterranean, Japanese and traditional. It takes the average tourist about six hours to walk through all of Keukenhof, but people who are genuinely interested in flowers and gardening are going to need more than a whole day.
Filled with countless statues, wells, artificial lakes and sailable rivers, Keukenhof is a true fairytale realm, where the beauty of the colors and the mixed fragrances make you feel like you are in a whole other world. It’s no wonder Keukenhof is the most popular Dutch tourist garden, with over 700,000 annual visitors.
If you are passionate about flowers and gardening then Keukenhof is the perfect destination for you. Aside from starring at the beautiful flower ornaments for hours, gardeners can buy all sorts of tulip seeds, flower books or encyclopedias, and get the best gardening tips from Dutch experts. For those uninterested in the exhibits there are charming bars and restaurants where they can just count the hours go by.
Less famous than other attractions in the Netherlands, Keukenhof Garden should find its place on your vacation itinerary. It’s a beautiful place you won’t soon forget.
