Lindau – Germany’s Piece of Heaven

Most of us are shaped differently when it comes to travel: you are either a sea or a mountain person. And if you’re looking for a destination that offers them both, a charming little city named Lindau is the answer. This beautiful region offers so many ways of spending your holiday, that you will never regret to have chosen the city called “the most beautiful end of Germany”.
Somewhere near the Switzerland border, Lindau is an old Bavarian island-town in the Eastern part of Lake Constance. The old city is located on an 0.68 square kilometer island, connected with the mainland by bridge and railway. Lively and colorful streets, romantic alleys and some really unique sights for Bavaria and even Germany – you can all find them here, in Lindau.
Once you get in Lindau, you should know that you have the chance to see one of the most beautiful harbors in Europe. The most attractive harbor on Lake Constance is dominated by a 6 meter lion monument, a work of art by the sculptor Johan van Halbing. Although it is fascinating to be seen by day, make sure you don’t miss the show of lights when the evening approaches and the 6,000 light bulbs are turned on.
Probably one of the most impressive yet typical buildings in Bavaria is Lindau’s Alte Rathaus (The Old Town Hall). Completed in 1436 in a Gothic style and modified a century after in the style of Renaissance, this landmark is wonderfully preserved. Paintings in the oriel represent the Ten Commandments and scenes from the German Imperial Diet (Parliament).
Lindau is a perfect starting point for excursion in the Alps. The famous Santis cable car in Switzerland, the Sea Life Center in Constance, Island of Mainau in the Constance Lake and the wonderful Salem Castle or the old town of Meersburg, they can all be reached within a day, from Lindau.
In the summer months, the beaches of the lake are packed with tourists who prefer the mountain sun. Cycling around Lake Constance, trekking, hiking, sailing or renting a boat are some of the options you have if you’re not the biggest fan of bathing in the lake. Moreover, Lindau is just an hour away from ski resorts in Germany and Switzerland, therefore it is a cheap alternative for accommodation during winter.
