Malta – a bond between Europe and Africa

Somewhere between Sicily (Europe) and Tunisia, a group of seven islands form the most beautiful island nation of the Mediterranean Sea. Malta is closer to Europe (93 km to Sicily, comparing with 288 to Tunisia), therefore this wonderful country is considered to be European. The sights of the islands, though, are exotic and uncommon for every single European.

A formerly United Kingdom colony, Malta is a vital strategic point and has been, for years, under many cultural influences. This can be seen in the colorful architectural styles on the islands: Malta, Gozo, Comino, Comminotto and Filfla. The capital of the country is Valetta and the unique feature of the island is the one you cannot find at any other Mediterranean country: the official languages are Italian and English.
Valetta hides over 7,000 years of history, and nowadays this can be seen from the streets of the capital (sites like the Megalithic Temples) to the city’s Museum of Archaeology (one of the richest and most famous in all of Europe). Definitely, the most impressive piece of baroque art can be found in St. John’s co-Cathedral, along with the Caravaggio’s Beheading of St. John.
Although World War II left visible marks on the city, Valetta was officially declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 1980. But this decision was not made just because of its long list of Roman Catholic churches. The Grandmaster’s Palace, currently the House of the Representatives of Malta and the office of the Presidency of Malta, built around the statue of Neptune, is an astonishing and unique fortified structure, and this is just one of the numerous palaces that make up the sights of Valetta.
But do not imagine Malta as just a heaven for the history and archaeology lovers. With its world famous crystal blue waters, sandy beaches and luxury resorts, Malta is a top destination for all the tan lovers in the world. Millions of tourist flock to the islands in the summer, to taste a bit of the Maltese flavors.
