Mauritius – the pearl of Africa

In the Southwest Indian Ocean, one can find the most charming and romantic beaches in the world. The unique landscapes and the coral reefs are transforming Mauritius into one of the main destinations for tropical lovers. The African nation island is situated at about 900 km east of Madagascar and it is a constituent part of the Mascarene Islands, along with the French Reunion and the Agalega Islands.

Having just 2,040 sq km and a coastline of about 177 km, you can be sure that every meter of the coastline and of the island is worth visiting, due to the amazing variety of the scenery. Moreover, the climate you can find here is one of a kind, in the whole world; although the main characteristics frame the climate into the tropical category, the dry winds from May to November and the hot and humid weather for the rest of the year, make the island a perfect destination.

Therefore, in the North of this tiny island, The Grand Bay and Pereybère represent the top of the touristic development of the nation, with numerous resorts. The Triolet Shivala is the longest village on the island and the home of the biggest temple. Another thing to see in this part of the island are the remaining walls of the Balaclava estate.

Also, the most famous place in Mauritius for water sports is Ile aux Cerfs, with full facilities for all the tourists, also known as an eco-friendly area. The Vieux Grand Port hides the ruins of the first Dutch fortifications on the island, while the Domaine du Chasseur has a natural advantage – over 900 hectares of stags, monkeys and boars (some of them endangered).

The most eloquent proof of the colonial rivalries over this tropical islands are the Martello Towers in the West. Nearby, you can see the biggest bird park is Casela (having 25 hectares and over 140 species of birds, maybe also the famous dodo). The capital of the nation is at Port Louis, that covers a World Heritage Site – Aapravavasi Ghat, the landing point of the enslaved workers from India, in the 19th century.
