With more than 6 million visitors, the fair hosted in Munich is absolutely one of the greatest and most anticipative events not just for the Germans, but for all Europeans. Whether you are a beer drinker or not, you simply cannot miss this festival if you are in the area, since the local tradition, culture and passion for beer come together and create one of the greatest social events in the world.

The dates of the festival vary from year to year. This year, the festival started on September 19 and it’s going to last until October 4. The organizers decide on the date a couple of years in advance, so if you cannot make it this year, make sure you will find accommodation for next year. Finding a hotel room in Munich right before the festival is practically impossible.

The first edition of Oktoberfest took place in 1810, to celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. The fair was canceled during unfortunate events, like wars. Last year, during the 175th edition, 6.2 million visitors consumed almost 7 million liters of beer, 100,000 liters of wine and 126,000 liters of non-alcoholic beverages.

The entry in the tents of Oktoberfest is free, but if you would like to enjoy your beer while sitting down, make sure you book a seat before March. There are more than 30 tents at Oktoberfest, but the best tents are the Small and Medium ones. If you don’t have a seat reservation but you’re still planning to go to Oktoberfest, get there in the mornings or no later than 2:30 pm, otherwise you will have to stay in line to get in the tents.
