If you ever wanted to see what “a view from the top” really means, this place in Norway is probably the best place to see it. Preikestolen, known in English as Preacher’s Pulpit or Pulpit Rock, is a massive cliff, 604 meters tall overlooking Lysefjorden. The top of the cliff is a 25 by 25 meters square and flat surface that drives hundreds of tourists yearly to it.

“Nowhere do these terrific forces appear more formidably conjoined than in the surprising strait known as the Lyse-Fiord. The Lyse-Fiord is the most terrible of all the Gut Rocks of the ocean”. Victor Hugo.
It’s certainly a dangerous attraction, but no safety ledge has been constructed in order to preserve its beauty. No one has accidentally fallen off the cliff, but records indicate that this is a place suicides happen very often. Nonetheless, Pulpit Rock is one of the most visited attractions in Norway - almost 100,000 take the 7,5m annually to see the odd rock.
Getting to the rock is not easy, but it certainly has the reward of a great view. The road to Preikestolen is very steep at times, starting off at the Preikestolhytta Youth Hostel, at 270 meters and finishing at 604m. Finding the way to the top is not a problem, considering the marked trail, but you will need boots, determination and lots of water to get you going. The walk is not that long, a distance of around 4 kilometers and it takes from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the hiker’s experience.
The rock is reachable from the Stavanger-region. To hike to the Pulpit Rock you can choose theferry to Tau or Oanes and continue by bus/car/taxi to Preikestolhytta. The trail to reach the top is set against a scenic landscape and is well marked, the hiking trip lasting on average 3-4 hours in total.
