Dunnotar is very impressive. From a distance it appears to be built on an island but it is actually connected to the mainland by a low spit of land. It is enchanting to see as it is enough intact that you can imagine life there. It has a big room the looks over the sea through a barred window which was cruelly used as a prison for a time. Entering the castle is from low down, up stairs large enough to accommodate one horse at a time past the guard tower. Worth the effort in spite of the rude,. sarcastic ticket seller by the road.
