Slovenia is proof that there are some areas in Europe that are really underrated when it comes to tourism promotion. This small country is the only place in Europe where you can see a perfect harmony between a developing and modern atmosphere and evidence of living history. This is a place where traditions, culinary art, the sights and villages seem to have not changed at all in the last hundreds of years.
5. Ptuj
Anxious about the spring, the men in the city of Ptuj, located in Eastern Slovenia, dress up in sheep furs, they wear scary masks and bells in order to scare the winter away. This lovely spring traditional ritual named Kurentovaje takes place in February and includes a parade, music, theater plays, contests and many parties.
4. Piran
The “Dubrovnik of the North” as it used to be called, is strategically located on a peninsula, well protected against any kind of enemies. The city was ruled by Romans, Byzantines, Franks and Venetians. The last ones greatly influenced the city’s architecture. During their domination, buildings like the monastery of Saint Francis or the Red Venetian House were erected.
3.Ljubliana
The cosmopolitan capital of Slovenia is the most active city of the country. For an amazing experience, try to walk on the shores of the Lublianica river during the Night of the Wild Madders, when the local people celebrate with a traditional parade of their boats and by burning up boats on the river. Also, once you’re there, don’t miss the vinotekas, the bars where the local wines can be served.
2.Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle or Predjama Grad, as it is known in the area, was built in the 12th century but it was first attested in the 13th century. And if you think you’ve seen it all, find out that this structure is located in the middle of a 123 high limestone cliff, in the entrance of a cave.
1. Julian Alps
People say that this is the best place in Europe for hiking, climbing and mountaineering. Whether you are or not into these sports, you just have to see these gorgeous landscapes. It’s like visiting the most amazing portrait an artist ever created: snowy cliffs, alpine villages, fast rivers and blue lakes, it’s all there.
