It is not very often that permissions are granted to develop UNESCO World Heritage Sites into major tourist attractions by laying a pathway through them. This is all the more true in the case of those tropical rain forests with stunning canopies and dense vegetation that are being considered both  a national treasure and a gorgeous ecological heaven, a jewel to the planet.

That’s why a brilliant design has been conceptualized to turn the stunning tropical rain forest region of Barron Gorge National Park in Australia, into a delightful green heaven for visitors.

Running from the Cairns suburb of Caravonica to Kuranda, Queensland, the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway offers an amazing ride that glides over a breathtaking region without even touching or disturbing its sensitive and intricate eco-system. With great effort to preserve the beauty, tranquility and grandeur of this rare ecological heritage in the long term, after seven long years of planning, loads of approvals, and 14 months of construction, the experience of seeing everything from above seems priceless.

Safe and secure, the whole structure allows a six-person gondola cabin to move smoothly just six meters above the sea of green. The trip in its entirety will offer you a two and a half hour ride both ways, but you can opt for a one way trip that takes a leisurely 90 minutes.

Gently moving over the thick canopy for a stunning 7.5 km, there are two intermediate stops with four main towers that lie along the way. Easily accessible for visitors, Skyrail’s Caravonica Terminal is one “extremity” of the journey – 15 minutes north of Cairns, and 50 minutes south of Port Douglas.

And as the journey begins, at 545m (1788 ft) high the Red Peak Station is the highest point of the cable way that amazes with a breathtaking guided 175 m rain forest boardwalk. There is also a stop at the spectacular Barron Falls offering you boardwalks that lead to three unique lookouts of the falls.

Incredibly popular and astonishingly refreshing, a trip through and above this internationally hailed beacon of eco-tourism will allow you to fall in love once again with the untouched beauty of the forests. The use of Skyrail is a great example of how one can experience nature without tampering with it.
