Apart from taking a walk on the wild and windy beaches of the frozen Northern Sea, tuning in to some music therapy provided by the waves and admiring rugged landscape, there are so many more activities one can enjoy while in Sylt. Germany’s fourth largest island has several charming villages, one of the most popular being Kampen. What stands out from the picturesque houses is the Romanesque St. Severin Church built in 1450, which is one of the oldest in the Northern Germany. Its steeple was used for marine orientation, until the famous Lighthouse was later built.

The specific Frisian cottages on the island are something you can see only here and almost every house has a story of its own. The most luxurious ones were the homes of the ship captains in the past and some of them are still preserved and can be visited nowadays. Most of the captain houses can be found in the village of Keitum. Some of the houses that used to belong to the elite are inhabited today by locals, while some have been turned into restaurants, small shops and hotels.
