The largest and the most popular island of the Canary Islands is a major Spanish attraction. With its charming landscape, it hosts over 10 million visitors per year. The Tenerife is very popular especially during the Catholic Easter, but it’s one of the few all-year-round open season islands.
Tenerife was not always that prospering, though. The tourist started flocking to the island only after the development of mass air travel, in the 1960s. Although, for political reasons, is part of Spain and therefore, of European Union, Tenerife, as all of the Canary Islands have customs and separate taxes, therefore one can find tobacco and alcohol cheaper than anywhere else in the EU.
The island is also “the home” of the tallest peak of Spain - Pico del Teide. Being 3,718 meters high, the mountain is surrounded by a veritable moonscape, with rock formations of intense volcanic chroma. Pico del Teide and the regions nearby form one of the largest Spanish natural parks. Daily access to the areas are granted from two cities - Puerto de la Cruz and Playa de las Americas.
Also, this part of the island - Playa de las Americas-Los Cristianos stands as one of the areas with the greatest varieties of lodging, restaurants, bars and other going out opportunities. The city was actually built for the tourists, therefore a tourist in the mood for fun can find here the best place for enjoying a crazy holiday.
On the other hand, the southern part of the island can be the perfect place for enjoying a quiet and peaceful holiday. More than in other parts of the islands, here, the natives greet you not just in Spanish or English, but also in German or Italian. The beaches are desert-white, due to the sands imported from the Sahara Desert.
