Air travel can be a hassle. Delays, bad service, bad food, and cancellations can make you shudder at the thought of even getting on a plane. While there are few good airlines out there, the majority are average and there are just some that should just be avoided:
Air Canada
Despite spending a lot of money to upgrade their fleet, Air Canada is still awful. Old planes with one big movie screen still dominate their fleet. The food tastes like it was cooked a few years ago and the flight attendants are surly. There are groups all over the web dedicated to highlighting how bad Air Canada can. The facebook group “I’d rather walk than fly Air Canada” has 1,900 members.

American Airlines
It’s canceling flights, cutting routes, firing employees, and charging you more money for fewer services. American has had a bad reputation for awhile and recent changes in their service will have you wishing that you took any other mode of transportation.

Philippines Airlines
Old planes make this airline one to avoid. The service is average and the planes don’t have personal screens. They look old and they feel old. You’ll barely see the movie screen while you shift around in seats older than the subtitled movie you’re watching. While the seats can be cheap, it’s an awful ride.

Air China/China Eastern
Chinese airlines have a bad reputation among frequent fliers. I know frequent fliers who will pay triple the price to avoid one of these airlines. Old planes, poor service, and bad maintenance make flying these planes risky. They have awful service records and frequent problems. You can fly on them for cheap but why risk it?

Gulf Air
Its flights may be cheap but you get what you pay for. Flights are frequently delayed or canceled without reason, the meals are poor, and the staff is unfriendly. Moreover, you won’t be compensated for any lost time and the staff will do nothing to accommodate you. In fact, they probably could care less. Gulf Air needs to take some lessons from its neighbor Emirates and learn what flying is all about.

US Airways
US Airways is ranked as having some of the worst service out of any American carrier. US Airways is now charging you for water and snacks. That’s fine and expected on a low cost carrier but not when you are still paying a full fare. Planes are late or delayed, the staff is unfriendly (you’d be too if you made what they made), and meals no longer exists. Now they’re raising fares and cutting routes too.

I agree with Quickroot re Aerolineas Argentinas. Airplanes straight out of the 1970’s.. and think the stewardesses were straight out of the seventies as well! Surly old women with no makeup and no pleasantries. Horrendous food, which we (and everyone around us) pushed round the plate and then abandoned altogether. Old TV’s that flickered non stop. Felt like we were back in time.
The worst is definitely Phuket air. I stuck in Gatwick London for 4 days 3 nights. Even they put me in a nice hotel at the airport but it’s still very bad. We took off after the 4th day and had to fly back to Gatwick after flying 2 hours! They announched that there’re some problems with the airplane. You know what? The indian guy sat next to me just closed his eyes and pray. The other guy was shouting sth. like ” WE all gonna die” oh man that’s sth. I will never forget in a life time. We knew that the plane had problem cos it was on newspaper in London just before we took off! By the way that was a flight from London to Bangkok. Eventually we are transfered to Thai airways after a big long fight with the staffs of Phuket air. I think the business went bankrutcy.Thanks god!

I never fly on any of the major airline companies in the United States. By far, of all the major airlines, American Airlines is on my shit list. Bad seats, poor customer service, poor quality. It is a Greyhound bus with wings. I would rather take Amtrack across the country for a few days rather than be stuck in one of American Airlines flying tubes of hardship.
Philippine Airlines is also a bad air carrier in Asia. During the company’s infancy their arrival time were most of the time never on time. I remember having to have to wait at the airport to pick up passengers because they were always being delayed. Filipinos tend to bring to the Philippines every thing they want and can possibly legally bring onboard the aircraft without thought to weight constraints. Go to LAX during Philippine Airlines check in times and you’ll see lines of passengers as far as the eyes can see with boxes and boxes of luggage. I’m surprised the airplane can even take off with so much unneccessary weight. A flying anvil.
I bet , no airline can beat Air India to be the worst airline in the world. Never on time, No information available for the reasons for delay, Pathetic service, old planes especially to South east asia and gulf regions, 60s Air Hostesses to name a few. Never fly Air India if want good service and a pleasant flying experience, on-time
Air Canada is not bad. Im not into having my ass kissed on a plane. Give me my drink and be on your way. I hate over friendly fake assed staff. I dont check luggage so thats not a problem for me. Ive taken flights with USairways/Delta/NWA/United/Air Canada and wetjet. I gotta say that United and USairways are by far the worst for EVERYTHING…. old shitty planes where the seats are flat and the air conditioning barely works on most , not all planes. If you like friendly people and great service Wetjet is the way to go, but alas they dont service the cities I frequent the most. Air Canada is definately not the worst of the bunch in North America let alone the world.

The worst airliens are in Africa, some examples the airlines in Congo and Sierra Leona that I was lucky to avoid! .
Even one of the best African airlines (ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES) IS HORRIBLE!!!!! I was in a flight between HK – Bangkok . The plane was full of passengers with a lot of HUGE boxes, faiting like crazy with the employees who allow them to board, everybody was an export dealer, the wear several layers of cloths, 5 -10 pants, 7 jackets, 20 clocks, I saw even a guy with 40 bassball caps, one in the top of the other. The plane was one day late, nobody offer an explanation. It was really old and dirty like a public batroom in a train station in a developing country… ( including rest of the foods of the last year, insects etc. The seat and the floor that maybe was a carpet in the past were originally red and now look completely black! Every single piece of the plane seems to be moving independently, maybe somebody still many screws, (yes somebody also still my seat belt, and I should move to another seat.
It was horrible! but the hostess were beautiful!

Cubana de Aviacion… ( Cubana kill-cion ) many years ago when all airliines give away foods to the passenger for free, Cubana only give one small sugar candy, once, I took 2 and the hostess told me only one please, and ask me to return back the second!

Air Canada is the absolutely worst I have ever flown……not on time, old aircrafts, terrible service…I travel on business within Europe and North America…and have flown rather “adventurous” airlines in Africa and Asia…but nothing beats Air Canada. I should have asked my money back, at least the extra charge for business class. I was an old, rickety pigsty to pit it mildly………..

Yes i also saw that happened with ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES when I q up to check in. They came to check in with all big bags, big boxes and I mean really really big! IM surprised that gulf air is here it has really turned around now did you know that gulf is known for spending the most money to keep up its maintenence record infact other airlines in the worl requests gulf air to maintain their planes! they refurbished theyr 330 and 340 and it looks so magnificent and guess what they are changing the interior all over again! and they ordered like 787(pretty luxioures in my opinion) 330-300(wow those are big) and 320 it has really changed and theyr cre is amazing and really helpful!

United Airlines Few Faults:
Arrived on time but car broke down so I could not make it to flight. Then the United Airlines Representative said I’ll make it on a flight that night because there was allot of open seats. Then when I got in I was told to hold on and they never put me on stand by. Then I was put on stand by at 11:30pm My Luggage was sent out so I had no choice but to continue my flight to RDU which was not my final destination. At that time I was planning to arrive at JFK. Then I stood in customer service for 2.5 hrs with only 20 people in line. I understand one customer at a time but something realistic. I had bad knees so I had to crawl on the ground, this was degrading. Then I was put on a 6 am stand by and not even provided any lodging, so I slept on the floor of the airport by myself in the cold weather. I then caught a slight cold because of the cold wind. I then was wait listed as number 6 then pushed to 8 at 6 am. Then the next flight I was pushed again on the wait list to 12.
Then again I was wait listed again at 15 which kept getting worse. Then I stood in line again and every time I talked to someone I was given the same unhelpful response. I was also told that I can get a reservation for 150 plus tax and the difference. In my case I was poor because I’m a student. I told the lady at customer service that I would fly anywhere to the East Coast and drive back home. She said there was nothing was available and I was removed from stand by earlier as well. I was lied to becauase people before and after me got flights. Then I was put in wait list again, with some priority since I was a frequent flyer. Then I collapased into a chair for an hour and then waited to be called again on the wait list. I was actually 2nd this time on the list, so I though I’d get on the flight but nothing happened. I had to cancel my flight with American airlines that I had later today at 4:15pm from RDU to JFK. I then asked for a hotel or a place to rest and I was given a mean look. Nobody was helpful and ignored my questions and showed hostility at many points.
Not only did I cancel my flight, I lost my hotel reservation in RDU and JFK. I also had to leave early to resturn to LAX. If I stay later I will miss classes when I take my return flight. I have wasted nearly 2000.00 dollars, time, energy, and my health
I’ve been training to become a pilot and I think it’s shameful to even be considered an employee. My family flies around the world every few months for business and family vists. I have been flying on numerous airlines and this is by far the worst. The treatement was sickening, as a poor college student I’m suffering, ruined my only holiday I have. It would be emabarsing to work for such a lowly company. I have the intention to report this to the best business burea, any and all newspapers. I’m freezing in the airport and United Airlines is terrible in all ways. I would be sickened by the thought of taking a ticket from you airlines again. I will tell all my friends never to fly united and pay the extra dollar for a real airlines. If I had a choice I’d walk to the east coast. I have been patient, never showed any anger or frustration. I also will not be able to send my friends and family gift or even see them. I have not been home and it is thanks to united airlines. This is a shared belief of many people I have talked to and we have been understanding because of the holidays but this was a waste. My vaction became a nightmare thanks to united airlines. I think your airlines should be referred to as united garabagelines. At this time I will keep waiting till tonight for my flight out to Washington where I hope I’m not stuck again. This would not suprise me if this happened.
Air Canada the worst in North America
Air Canada is a disgrace! All those taxpayers’ dollars have been poured into that bureaucratic nightmare–and they have only gotten worse! Their marketing is deceptive, with misleading prices that deceptively omit the ridiculous “fuel surcharge” etc. Their service is NON-EXISTENT. Just ask the hundreds of passengers who were held hostage inside their smelly planes for 10-12 hours, with no food and only one serving of water.
Air Canada is just one more reason that I am embarrassed and ashamed to be carrying a canadian passport.
While I would agree that Air Canada is not stellar, I have to say that Westjet, once an airline that I actually enjoyed flying with, has really tanked in their performance. I have experienced consistent delays, and now, on a short flight, you get coffee or water, that’s it. Call me demanding, but I figure if I’m paying $400 – $500 for an hour and a half commuter flight, I should at least be offered tea or pop. This is not a huge expense for them, and makes a pretty big difference to my enjoyment of the flight, particularly if I have been kept waiting for three hours in the airport due to delays.
Many years ago I flew Air India from JFK to LHR on a brand new 747 (the fare was much less than BA). About two hours into the flight black beetles began to creep up from under the floor. There were hundreds, and passengers were seriously disturbed by the occurance. Air India never gave any explanation. Wierd.

Branding Pahilippine Airlines as one of the worst airlines is totally baseless and smacks of bias. PAL has one of the youngest fleets in Asia and their OTP is way above the industry average.
Philippines is not that bad. It has a great share of brand new planes on its fleet. But larger aircraft are the oldest ones with fleet age of 10 to 12 years old.
American Airlines is not bad either, It has good american network but not my first choice.
I would suggest add airlines like Koryo of North Korea, Olympic Airlines of Greece and Biman Bangladesh as the worst airlines and make this one more interesting and factual.
to add, its funny to say Philippines got a old fleet, where I dont see aircraft like DC3s, DC-10s or L1011s in the picture. What I see are sparkling Airbus planes.

What is this, an ESL website? Also, you folks should check out the fallacy of vividness. Just because you had a bad experience, or a good one for that matter, doesn’t make the airline bad or good. Generally, articles like the one we are commenting on are based upon statistics of hundreds, if not thousands of passengers, not some single person who had a bad experience one day. I think so many travelers behave like asses anymore that I don’t trust any opinions offered. I’d rather rely on hard evidence.

Philippine Air was real unpleasent. 3+ hour delay leaving BKK to Manila spent on plane at gate no reason given. 2 hour flight turns to 5 hours. At Manila confusion reigns barely get on connecting flight only to wait another hour on plane before take-off. Flight attendant did not sit down on landing, very dangerous. Manila to Sydney served vegetarian dinner with eggs crackers with lard. Would not allow return from Melbourne so I take Qantas to Sydney and see PAL plane at Melbourne being boarded to Sydney. I arrive at Sydney and board that same plane. Land in Manila for 12 hour layover in scary Manila hotel, free breakfast with no vegetarian option. I have to pay departure fee for being in Philippines 12 hours. I have to pay in Philippine money. Bathroom attendants at airport demand money- at the airport? I like the Philippines its nice outside of Manila and the people too but the national airline is a disgrace. Japan Air is nice, Thai Air is nicer, China Air gets you there in clean cabins.
I have flown all over the world with some fairly bad airlines, but nothing takes the biscuit like TAM Brazilian. Loss of luggage TWICE never to be returned and with pathetic compensation nearly a year later!
Needed to change my return ticket and got charged $980 which is the original amount of the ticket (their website says $100 by the way!) and they never even bothered to reply to my letters.
The odds of dying with one of the top 25 airlines is 1 in 13.57 million……. with TAM its 1 in 1.3 million.
TAM suck which is a shame because the food isn’t bad and the FA are nice enough.

I am amazed that Afghan Ariana Airlines and Air Koryo are not on this list; both of these carriers are banned from operating in the E.U. due to their not meeting the minimum international safety standards. I would describe both these airlines as ‘flying coffins’. What about Yemenia, Lion Air, Mahan Air and Phuket Air?
Air Canada, American Airlines and U.S. Airways may be very poor in terms of service and value for money but at least they will get you to your destination in one piece, I cannot say the same for the ‘flying coffins’.
I am from the airline industry myself, and let me tell you. The author of the article is right. Gulf air is indeed one of the worst airlines. They lust my luggage once and I have not been compensated, and still busy after 2 years to get my money back. I believe Japan Airlines is the best. Japanese find service utmost important and do not accept anything else than that!!!

This list is frankly, pretty arbitrary. First, China Eastern and Air China’s recent track records are pretty good, and average fleet age is younger than ANY US-based carrier right now (market is booming, so they’re getting a lot of new planes). Ok sure, maintenance (cleanliness) is not that great, but there weren’t any major problems in a while. And all these airlines that have been banned from flying in the EU are not even there… this blog’s pretty random.
garuda indonesia is the worst ive been on the operate a boing 737-800 which looks like its a boing 737-200 due to there lack of cae, they can fly the thing but when your coming into land god forbid you forget to pray
those of you who say “air canada is not the worst…I had a good experience with them”, ETC., just remember, that just because you had one or two good experiences with an airline, does NOT mean they are good. These evaluations are based on hard data, many thousands of customer evaluations, etc. So they are right on the money!
EMIRATES – ARE CRAP!!! No drink refreshments offered (i.e. water or orange at the beginning of a flight)Food was left around for 1hr after everyone had finished eating! Rtn flight I remembered to bring a big flask so I wouldn’t die of dehydration – even brought my own tea bag … they pointed me in the direction of the hot water station!! (Hello – numbnuts!!! Health & Safety obviously does not exist here!!) Yes, you have good looking people – but go back to the desert because that is not what is called ‘SERVICE!!’

I have traveled with pretty much every airline company mentioned here and even tough I traveled extensively in africa with some pretty awful airlines, SATA AIRLINES is hands down THE WORST AIRLINE EVER. average 4 hour delays for every flight, AVERAGE. Worst grumpiest stewards, awful call service that never knows what happens, hold fleet that constantly malfunctions, crappy website that is offline half the time and now add the fact that its not cheap. If they didnt have exclusive right to flight to the paradise that is the azores I would never set foot there. I understand that not every airline can be like Emirates or Singapure but at least be closer to Jetblue who even tough gets annoying with the extra charges still provides awesome service for the price they charge
Are you all kidding me? Ethiopian airlines is one of the best airlines I have ever used. Whoever said that the hostesses don’t know English you must be lying. Every single hostess on the plane is required and knows english. And far as the customer service, baggage, and cleaniless go it’s they rank high. Ethiopian airlines is well known all around the world as one of the best airlines in Africa.

alitalia has to be in the top 5. They are always on strike, always delayed, planes are old, connections are missed and on and on and on. Airport staff is rude, they just ignore you if they cannot give you an answer. Bad attitudes abound on this clunker of an airline……
I would have to agree with American Airlines being near the top of the list. If you are in coach, they don’t care about you. If you have An AAdvantage account, you can’t upgrade unless you either pay for a “Full Fare” (which you wouldn’t do, when you can get the same seat for less than half of the full fare price) or you are a gold or elite member.
At least on United you can upgrade ANY FARE. You may not get it, if you are not high milage, but at least you can still put in for it on United, with any fare.
Philippine Airlines is not that bad…they serve food FOR FREE, the planes are quite new, they maintain their planes to ensure the safety of the passengers, and the flight attendants are so hospitable and the cabin smells good, like perfume! but what i dont like about PAL is that their fares are quite expensive and flights are delayed sometimes…
Ok, air canada, they ae decent, i prefer them over american or any of those, i fly Alaskan and westjet, theyve got good service
flight attendants on west jet and horizon (alaskas sister) are always cracking jokes and fun things,very nice ride

Putting North american airlines in this list is ridiculous. If americans ever got round to leaving there own country they would get introduced to a new level of bad airlines.
AeroSur (bolivia) and Air India have been the worst I have come across regarding service.
Singapore Airlines is one of the best.

The term worst is relative. Worst in the world would have to be all of the airlines in Asia and Africa that are not allowed to fly into more developed regions like Europe and North America. Worst in terms of service and cleanliness is another matter compared to worst in terms of plane crashes and maintenance. For service and cleanliness, it is rather subjective but the stats do not lie for crashes and maintenance.
My own personal worst airline: United Airlines (tried to close the window blind and half the panel came down and no bother to come to help; the massive tube tv’s that would kill someone if they dropped from their holders, and the general racket and creakiness of the plane as it took off and departed. Add to that rude rude rude flight attendants and nothing to eat or drink on a 3 hour flight because they “ran out”.)
I think air india is the worst airline . They treat the passengers and also the food yakk..we cannot imagine also i hate it….

The worst: Delta Airlines. They lose luggage and have the worst customer service. The best planes smokin’ are SOUTHWEST AIRLINES! I never have problems with them! And their commercials aren’t bad neither!
British airways is terrible, poor customer service, requiring transit Visa and poor treatment within the plane. They arbitrarily cancel reservations too and they do not help the passengers in any way. Air tran is another bad one. Lufthansa can be rude and expensive too. Air France also makes goof ups, but I have found them to be best of the worst.
I recently did a “round the world” trip via the Star Alliance and the contrast in airline quality between the good and the bad is astounding. Most of the carriers were actually pretty good–but the two North American airlines we were forced to use were not just bad but appalling. Both–Air Canada and US Airways–are already on your front page list but all I can do is say “don’t fly with either of these if you have ANY other option–even a geriatric donkey would be better.
My objection to both is the level and quality of service. Despite being “full fare” carriers, Air Canada and US Airways are attempting to charge for every little thing, even to the point of ignoring the terms and conditions printed on my ticket. Check in and cabin crew are rude and surly and, even if you break down and pay for something, your $10. sandwich is so bad you’d send it back if it was free.
Avoid at all costs.
Air Canada has improved alot lately, they replaced most of the old airplanes and received brand new Triple 7s B777-200LR and B777-300ER.
With PTV in every seat offers you AVOD. Seats are very comfortable and gives more leg room. Even PTVs on regional jets CRJ705, EMB175 and EMB190. I don’t know why ppl think their airplanes are very old and outdated.
Philippine Airlines is the best choice if you are travelling domestic flights in the Philippines.. but if you are travelling international routes, well other airlines can give better service. FYI Philippine Airlines is a member of IATA. I bet you never really travelled that often to consider this the worst.

This report is outdated on the china airlines. The china airlines all use new aeroplaces. Their services are not top-rated but good, especially compared to say Qantas, US airlines, and many other European airlines. In fact in the last few years Air France has more accidents then any china airlines (there are none).
As I know ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES IS THE BEST AND COMFORTABLE AND ALSO, I AGREE ABOUT THE BEAUTY OF WOMEN BUT NOT ONLY ON THE HOSTS BUT ALSO IN THE COUNTRY.
hi my family is chinese and we live in australia.but most of our family is in shang hai china.the only airway to there without changing airlines is air china/eastern china.Whitch i absaloutly hate! no personal tvs,horrible food,one time this english guy sat next to me and poor guy couldnt understand the english they were saying!and guess what one time i sat in a window seat without a window! worst plane ever and once it was lunch time and shes like would u like rice or noodles and im like rice please then shes like sorry no rice.worst airline ever!(much rather prefer qantas or cathay pasific.
spirit airlines is the worst. i went to florida this week flying spirit and to and from fl i got delayed 2 hours. ther gave me $100 off card because they Knew i’d never fly spirit again and they wouldn’t waste anr money. that was my first time flying spirit and i will never fly it again.

Well to be honest with you, most of the airlines in South East Asia and Far East are the best.
I just try US Airways out of MEX several times and I could say that the ground staff were awesome and friendly and the puntuality were great and crews were nice and very profesional with security, they charge for anything extra you consume and I could say that it makes sense (my fly fare is always very afordable and fair) they dont have entreteintment sistems but for me is great to have time to read and relax, planes new!
I would recomend you try again US Aiways they migth not be the best on freebees but the quality, security, cleannees and friendlinees is great, they realy clean their act since they were bougth by America West.!
Sorry all, Air China (CA) is really the worst airline in the world, it has no-one to rival it’s inefficiency, lack of customer care, old beat up aircraft, awful entertainment (except watching the incompetent staff can be quite amusing), uncouth passengers (they must seek them out, there can not be so many pigs on a plane by coincidence) and uglyair hostesses (some American airlines come close on that one point). Avoid this airline at all cost, if the alternative is three times the price take it, if the airline is called Kamakazi take it, take anything OTHER than Air China. The mission statement should be ‘An African airline pretending to be a major airline, but acting like a budget airline’.

On my way to LA on United. Fortunately during the flight I wanted to go to the toilet and two of their flight attendants they were having a special time together. Well done united for providing a live show for their passengers. Love it..

Air Canada, Air China/ China Eastern aren’t bad at all. Don’t confuse Air China and China Airlines , which is based Taiwan. Taking China Airlines to China then making a transfer is way cheaper than flying non-stop on Air China. Food on Air China …or other customer service are not as good as China Airlines, but I would rather horrible food than plane crashing.
