Trento is located in the Adige Valley, a wide glacial valley with many rivers and lakes, that made from the scenery of the province a one of a kind sight. All around the city you can enjoy lakes like Lago di Garda, the Lago di Caldonazzo, the Lago di Levico and the Lago di Toblino. The city represents a major milestone in the unification of Italy, since it was under the rule of the Austrian Empire until 1918.

The most important sites of the city are the Cathedral of Saint Vigilio, the Piazza Duomo, the church Santa Maria Maggiore, the Buonconsiglio Castle. The Cathedral of San Vigilio (Il Duomo, as it is called in the city) was built on a pre-existent temple devoted to San Vigilio, the patron of the city. The church is one of the finest examples of the Lombard-Romanesque architectural style, although there are many Gothic influences.

Il Duomo is also the main spot of the historical center, mostly a pedestrian area. The square around the cathedral is called La Piazza del Duomo and it’s one of the most beautiful places in Trento, due to its frescoed houses. Here you can also find the Civic Tower, a bell and a clock tower that made history through the people of Trento.
